Wonder Under release paper (the paper on the back) works well for this, too. — After you’ve fused, turn over the fabrics. If there are any bubbles caused by the interfacing, just press them out. For velvet, press out any bubbles from the back to avoid crushing the nap. Some of these are vintage millinery flowers, and some are roses I made using the method described here. Can you tell which are which? A variation on this flower is the wild rose made from Angelina in this detail of Crazy in the Garden (full quilt on page 5). The white in the center of the petals was added with colored pencil. Straight stitching, along with the beads in the rose centers, helps secure the petals to the quilt. The silk chiffon leaves were attached simply by running a stem stitch (page 37) down their centers.
After embellishing the block, trim it to 81/2˝ × 81/2˝, which includes 1/4˝ seam allowances (or, if you prefer, trim to 9˝ × 9˝ for 1/2˝ seam allowances). Then zigzag stitch around its perimeter before assembling it into a quilt as an 8˝ × 8˝ finished block. Tip Completed pieced block If you are going to add beads later, do not bead right up to the 8˝ finished edge. Instead, give yourself a 1/4˝ margin inside the finished block boundaries for any beadwork. Have you ever broken a sewing machine needle sewing over a bead?
