A hammer can be stored. A balance inquiry at an ATM cannot. Beyond the economic fundamentals, there are further connotations of the service concept. If delivery can’t be requested through a reasonably formalized process, if training is unavailable, if outages or interruptions or other failures of performance don’t have a defined escalation point and resolution protocol – it is a poor service at best.

Web applications? The well-known shopping cart is a transactional system. Email or video? The message must be accurately accepted at the point of origin, stored precisely with no errors, and recreated accurately at the point of delivery. Word processing? The document must be created, updated, and displayed accurately and consistently. Chapter 3 of a document should not jump around unless the author moves it. Sometimes, “reporting” or “analytic” systems are distinguished from “transactional” systems, but reading data is also a transaction and subject to integrity concerns as well.

The customer experiences value through the individual acquired product (good or service). The shareholder experiences value through the product offering’s market success in the aggregate, relative to competing offerings – or competing use of capital. In other words, product lifecycle management – the shareholder’s overall concern – is distinct from the “quote to cash” sales cycle – the customer view. 2 shows the product management lifecycle, which produces entire product lines, each of which results in the production of individual products.
